Austin Kleon on Reading
10. I will throw a book across the room.
Austin Kleon wrote a little something about reading.
i just realized that fucking ross geller got tenure in the field of paleontology at, like, age 30? and must’ve been hired at that tenure track position in his mid-20s? how was he so young? how old was he when he got his PhD? did he just… get a job after graduating without even doing a postdoc? is this what the 90s were like? fuck the 90s. fuck ross geller. fuck the way rachel got that coffee shop job with no experience
Assuming he started grad school at a normal age (21) and then completed his degree in 4 years (not unheard of for geniuses in my field) and then assuming he got a faculty job straight of grad school (impossible even for geniuses in my field) and then assuming the traditional 6-years until tenure process…
Ross, at the youngest, feasible approximation, could have gotten tenure at 31. But he would’ve had to be a 1-in-a-million genius within the field of paleontology.
Ross was secretly a prodigy and everyone else on the show was so bored of his dinosaur talk they never realized.
